A Family-Owned Northern Virginia Electrical Contractor Built on Safety, Trust, and Service Since 1986
Root Electric is a family-owned and operated electrical contractor based in Woodbridge, Virginia, serving homeowners and businesses throughout Northern Virginia since 1986.
For four decades, our family has built Root Electric around a simple philosophy:
Safety First. Customer Service Always.
Electrical work affects the safety, comfort, and reliability of your home or business. We believe customers deserve more than someone who simply arrives, performs a repair, and leaves. They deserve experienced electrical professionals who listen, explain the problem clearly, recommend the appropriate solution, and perform the work with safety as the first priority.
Whether we are troubleshooting an electrical problem, upgrading an electrical panel, installing new circuits, helping a homeowner prepare for an electric vehicle, or completing electrical work for a commercial property, we bring that same approach to every project.

A Family Electrical Legacy That Began in 1986

William “Bill” Root Jr. founded Root Electric in 1986, beginning a family electrical business built around safety, trust, and customer service in Northern Virginia.

Root Electric founder William “Bill” Root Jr. with his son, Bill Root, who continues the family electrical business and its safety-first tradition in Northern Virginia.
The Root Electric story began in 1986, when William Root Jr., known to many customers and neighbors as “Senior,” established the family electrical business in Northern Virginia.
A Master Electrician, William built the company around values that still guide Root Electric today: honesty, electrical safety, quality workmanship, and treating customers like neighbors.
His wife, Janice Root, also played an important role in building the business. While William worked with customers in the field, Janice managed the administrative side of Root Electric and helped establish the personal level of customer service that remains part of our company culture today.
Root Electric was never intended to be simply a company that fixed electrical problems.
From the beginning, the Root family believed that helping customers understand electrical safety was an important part of being an electrician.
That philosophy became particularly visible through William Root's longtime newspaper column, “Bill's Safety Circuit.”
Electrical Safety Education Has Always Been Part of Root Electric
Long before homeowners could search Google or watch online videos about electrical problems, William Root was answering electrical safety questions for Northern Virginia residents through his Bill's Safety Circuit newspaper column.
He wrote about real electrical issues homeowners encountered, including:
- Overloaded electrical circuits
- Circuit breakers that repeatedly trip
- Warm switches and dimmers
- Extension cord safety
- Improper electrical wiring
- Aluminum wiring
- Electrical fire hazards
- Warning signs homeowners should not ignore
The underlying message was simple: homeowners are safer when they understand their electrical systems.
That principle remains part of Root Electric today.
Our electricians don't simply tell customers that something needs to be repaired. We explain what we found, why it matters, and what can be done about it.
You can learn much more about the Root family, see historical photographs, and explore examples from the original Bill's Safety Circuit newspaper archives in The Root Legacy: 40 Years of Safety & Trust.
A New Generation Continues the Root Electric Tradition
In 2005, William Root III, known as Bill Root, joined the family business after graduating from James Madison University.
Bill grew up in Prince William County and returned to work in the same Northern Virginia community where he was raised.
Rather than changing the principles on which Root Electric was founded, the next generation has continued them.
Today, Bill is a Master Electrician and Vice President of Root Electric, with more than 20 years of experience in the home services industry.
His approach to leadership reflects the same philosophy that guides Root Electric's relationship with customers: take care of the people performing the work so they, in turn, can take excellent care of the customer.
Under the next generation of the Root family, the company has continued serving residential customers while expanding its experience and capabilities for commercial electrical projects throughout Northern Virginia.
Four Decades of Local Electrical Experience
Northern Virginia has changed considerably since Root Electric began in 1986.
Homes have become more dependent on electricity.
Families now charge electric vehicles at home.
Modern kitchens use more electrical appliances.
Home offices require reliable circuits and power protection.
Electrical panels that were adequate decades ago may now be supporting loads that were never envisioned when the home was built.
Commercial buildings have changed as well, with increased electrical demands from computers, communications equipment, modern lighting, machinery, HVAC equipment, and other technology.
Through these changes, Root Electric has continued doing what it was founded to do: helping Northern Virginia homeowners and businesses use electricity safely and reliably.
Safety First Is More Than a Motto
Electricity is something most of us use every day without thinking about it—until something stops working.
A breaker begins tripping.
An outlet feels unusually warm.
Lights start flickering.
An electrical panel begins buzzing.
A homeowner purchases an electric vehicle and discovers the home's electrical system may need additional capacity.
A business purchases new equipment that requires a dedicated circuit or different electrical power requirements.
Sometimes these situations are simply inconvenient. Other times, they may be warning signs of a more serious electrical problem.
That is why safety has remained central to Root Electric's approach since 1986.
We evaluate the electrical system, explain what we find, and recommend solutions designed around the condition of the system and the customer's actual needs.
Experienced Electricians From the First Conversation
One of the things that has historically distinguished Root Electric is the level of electrical experience involved in the customer relationship.
When customers contact us about an electrical issue or planned project, we want to understand the situation before simply putting a service call on the calendar.
We ask questions about:
- What the customer has observed
- When the problem began
- Whether the problem is intermittent or constant
- What equipment is involved
- Whether electrical work has previously been performed
- What the customer wants to accomplish
In many situations, this conversation gives us useful information before an electrician ever arrives at the property.
It can also help us anticipate potential challenges and provide the customer with a better understanding of what may be involved.
Master and Journeyman Electrical Experience
Electrical work requires much more than knowing how to connect wires.
It requires understanding electrical systems, circuit protection, wiring methods, electrical loads, equipment requirements, electrical codes, and how all of those elements affect safety.
Root Electric's electrical projects are performed by experienced electrical professionals, including Master and Journeyman electricians.
Just as importantly, we expect our electricians to communicate clearly.
When we identify a problem, we want you to understand:
- What we found
- Why it matters
- Whether it creates a safety concern
- What should be corrected
- What options may be available
- Why a particular solution is being recommended
We believe informed customers make better decisions about their homes and businesses.

Our local experience matters because Northern Virginia contains a tremendous variety of homes and commercial properties.
An older Alexandria or Arlington home may present very different electrical challenges from a newer home in Gainesville, Haymarket, or Loudoun County.
Likewise, an older commercial office building may have very different electrical requirements from a modern machine shop or recently renovated commercial space.
After decades of working throughout the region, our electricians have experience with many of the electrical systems commonly found in Northern Virginia properties.

Customer Service Begins With Communication
Electrical systems can be complicated.
We do not expect our customers to know electrical terminology or diagnose electrical problems themselves.
That's our job.
Our responsibility is to explain what we find in understandable language.
If there is a problem, we explain it.
If different options are available, we discuss them.
If we discover an unexpected condition during the project, we keep the customer informed.
And if something does not need to be replaced, we believe the customer should understand that as well.
This emphasis on communication can be traced back to Root Electric's earliest days and William Root's belief that educating homeowners about electrical safety was part of being a good electrician.
Recommendations Based on What Your Electrical System Needs
Electrical work should not be based on selling the most expensive solution.
Sometimes a problem requires a major repair or upgrade.
Sometimes it doesn't.
A tripping breaker may indicate an overloaded circuit, damaged equipment, a wiring problem, or another condition that requires diagnosis.
An older electrical panel does not automatically mean the entire electrical system needs to be replaced.
A homeowner planning an EV charger may or may not require an electrical service upgrade depending on the home's existing capacity and electrical loads.
Our job is to evaluate the situation and explain what makes sense.
We want customers to understand not only what we recommend, but why we recommend it.
Our Reputation Is Built One Customer at a Time
For a family business, reputation is personal.
Every Root Electric project carries our family name.
That creates a responsibility to treat customers and their property with respect and to perform work we are comfortable standing behind.
Customer feedback has therefore always been important to our company.
Positive reviews tell us what customers appreciate.
Critical feedback gives us an opportunity to identify where we can improve.
Over the years, Root Electric has also received recognition from local publications and consumer organizations.
You can learn more about those recognitions on our Root Electric Awards & News page.
But awards are not our primary measure of success.
Our goal is much simpler:
We want customers to feel comfortable calling Root Electric again the next time they need an electrician—and recommending us to their family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.
