Four Decades of Family Values
There’s something special about a business that feels like home. In Northern Virginia, when you think of reliability and a handshake that means something, you think of Root Electric. As we step into 2026, we’re taking a moment to look back at the wires, the wisdom, and the wonderful family that started it all.
The Foundation: Honesty, Safety, and Janice’s Heart
It all began in 1986. William Root, Jr. (affectionately known by neighbors as Senior) didn’t just want to fix wires; he wanted to protect families. Known throughout the neighborhood as the master electrician who prioritized honesty over a quick buck, Senior became a local legend for his integrity and deep expertise.
But as the saying goes, behind every great man is an even greater woman. Janice Root, the administrative manager and the true backbone of the business, was the steady hand that kept the company—and the family—running smoothly. While Senior was out ensuring homes were safe, Janice was the heart at the home office, ensuring every customer was treated like a neighbor.
Knowledge is Power: Bill’s Safety Circuit
Senior’s commitment to the community went beyond house calls. He wanted to educate. Through his recurring newspaper column, "Bill’s Safety Circuit," he shared vital tips to keep Northern Virginia families safe.
A Look Back at Some of the Archives:

Bill’s Safety Circuit: A Timeline of Community Safety Education
Long before blogs, social media, or online DIY videos, Bill Root was educating Northern Virginia homeowners the most trusted way possible—through their local newspaper. His regular column, “Bill’s Safety Circuit,” became a familiar and respected feature, offering practical electrical advice rooted in real-life situations.
Early 2000s — Everyday Safety in Real Homes
Circuit Overloads & Tripped Breakers
One of the most common issues Bill addressed was overloaded circuits—often caused by portable appliances used during gatherings or renovations. He explained how circuit breakers protect homes from fires and why spreading electrical loads across circuits is essential for safety, not convenience.
Key lesson: Breakers trip to protect your family, not to inconvenience you.
Mid 2000s — Hidden Heat & Silent Warnings
Warm Switch Plates and Dimmers
In another widely read column, Bill responded to concerns about warm dimmer switches. He calmly explained how dimmers regulate voltage, why some warmth is normal, and when heat becomes a warning sign that should never be ignored.
Key lesson: Understanding “normal” vs. “dangerous” prevents panic—and prevents fires.
Mid–Late 2000s — The Dangers You Don’t See
Extension Cords & Improper Wiring
Bill frequently warned against misusing extension cords as permanent wiring, especially in attics and basements. He explained how shortcuts taken by homeowners—or unqualified installers—can quietly turn into serious hazards.
Key lesson: Just because something works doesn’t mean it’s safe.
Late 2000s — Older Homes, New Risks
Aluminum Wiring Awareness
As many Northern Virginia homes aged, Bill addressed the risks of aluminum wiring used in earlier decades. He educated homeowners on oxidation, fire risks, and the importance of professional inspections.
Key lesson: Older homes require modern safety awareness.
The Message That Never Changed
Across every column, every question, and every answer, Bill ended with the same reminder—a phrase many readers still remember today:
Knowledge is power—don’t be left in the dark !
These articles weren’t marketing tools. They were acts of service—written to protect families, empower homeowners, and make electrical safety understandable to everyone.
And that spirit lives on at Root Electric today.
2005: A New Generation Steps Up

The legacy took a beautiful turn in May 2005. After graduating from James Madison University with a degree in Finance, William Root III (Bill) officially joined the family business.
Having grown up in the Prince William County school system, Bill didn't just join a company; he returned to serve the community that raised him. He brought fresh energy and a modern perspective, all while keeping the original family motto: "Putting your safety first since 1986".
